JABA Supports Assembly Bill 1775 -- Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution

The Japanese American Bar Association of Greater Los Angeles supports Assembly Bill 1775, authored by Assemblymember Warren Furutani.  The bill would require the Governor to proclaim April 19 as “Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution,” designating that date each year as having special significance, and encouraging schools to conduct exercises to remember the life of Fred Korematsu and recognize the importance of preserving civil liberties.

Your letter of support for AB 1775 may be sent to:
        Assemblymember Warren T. Furutani
        State Capital Room 3126
        Sacramento, CA 95814

AB 1775 unanimously passed the California Assembly on May 20, 2010 and heads to the Senate.  For more information, please go to the Korematsu Institute website.

Free 24-hour Japanese Legal Hotline
The Los Angeles County Bar Association Lawyer Referral and Information Services (LACBA LRIS) announces the unprecedented launch of a free, 24-hour Japanese interpreting line to assist the local and international Japanese communities with their legal needs.

In collaboration with the 24/7 call center of Japanese Assistance Network, Inc. (JAN), a California Corporation that has assisted Japanese residents and travelers worldwide for over two decades, LACBA LRIS seeks to reach out to Japanese speaking nationals who are in need of legal help, but are reluctant to approach attorneys because of language and cultural barriers.

The LACBA LRIS was founded in 1937 and is a bona fide public legal nonprofit organization that strives to provide quality programs to benefit the community.
